Want to start learning amatuer robotics...?
Hi,
I have recently been looking at mindstorms robotics kits. Lots of people seem to be able to build cool stuff with these things but I think I'd like to learn the harder way. Buying a microcontroller and sensors then building the robot myself, from my own materials.
I have been looking around for a starter kit including microcontrollers that can be programmed using BASIC and what also include a few sensors that can get me started.
I don't know much about it really so I don't know what's good for a beginner and what's not so I was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction.
Basically all I want is a microcontroller (programmable in basic) and if it is possible? for the microcontroller to have pins for me to connect what input and output components I want.
Can I buy a microcontroller, then go to somewhere like rapidonline.com and buy a simple LED and use as an output component, then something like just a push switch as an input?

I teach robotics in both junior high and high school programs and would have to say based on student feedback that the mindstorm is not the way to go. It seems to be great fun for awhile but tapers fast when you realize that the robot is expensive and limited. In addition the students did not really learn anything from the point and click programming environment.
If I were to start over in robotics I would pick a microcontroller like the oopic (savage innovations). It is based on the ever popular microchip pic chips, similar to what the basic stamp uses, but it is programmed with object oriented basic. All the objects are created for you and you simply alter the properties and set the io line and run your program. When you are ready it is fully programmable in C as well. Prices start around 70 bucks and the oopic compiler is free.
Another thing I tell my students is that there is no harm in starting with a complete robot, programming it and learning the io functions of the sensors in a working environment. A great robot for that would be something like the oobug from the same company.
